🌟 Volunteering at 1st Great Wyrley Scouts
😂 Why Volunteer With Us?
Fun. Friends. Controlled chaos. and leaders who absolutely get stuck in.
If you think volunteering means standing at the side with a clipboard…
Oh No... Not at 1st Wyrley.
Our adults don’t supervise the fun — they become part of it, covered in paint, mud, marshmallow goo, and the occasional mysterious leaf that no one remembers picking up.
No experience needed. No pressure. Just bring yourself (and a willingness to join the fun).!
Volunteering with us means:
Helping young people grow into brilliant humans
Joining a team that laughs so much it counts as cardio
Learning new skills (some useful, some… questionable)
Making memories that last forever
Feeling good — volunteering is basically free therapy with snacks
And yes — every section gets to camp, and leaders get to join the fun too
"Our adults don’t stand on the side lines... They climb, craft, cook, explore, camp, and occasionally wonder how they ended up wearing a traffic cone as a hat!"
🎈 Ways You Can Help
Pick your adventure | Choose your chaos level | Prepare to enjoy yourself more than you expected.
🧒 Beaver Section Volunteer (Ages 5¾–8)
Beavers are tiny, energetic, and powered almost entirely by biscuits and pure imagination. You’ll help them explore, create, and occasionally stop them from gluing themselves to the table.
As a Beaver volunteer, you’ll:
- Join in with crafts, games, mini‑adventures, outdoor fun, and the occasional “how did we all end up muddy?” moment
- Laugh at least 12 times per session
- Witness tiny humans discovering the world in the most hilarious ways
Beavers go camping and have sleepovers too.
It’s adorable, chaotic, and full of tiny humans proudly carrying backpacks bigger than their entire bodies.
Leaders get to roast marshmallows, join the fun, and pretend they’re not scared of the dark.
Typical Beaver moments include:
“I made you a picture! It’s you… but as a dinosaur.”
“I’ve lost my shoe. Again.”
“I think my glue stick is broken because it’s stuck to my hand.”
You don’t need special skills — just patience, kindness, and the ability to pretend you’re not covered in glitter.
Bonus: Beavers think adults are magical. Even if your only magic trick is “I can open the juice boxes.”
🐾 Cub Section Volunteer (Ages 8–10½)
Cubs are adventurous, curious, and absolutely convinced they can build a functioning shelter out of three sticks and a leaf. They’re brilliant — and they need adults who are up for joining the fun.
As a Cub volunteer, you’ll:
- Join in with challenges, outdoor adventures, cooking, exploring, and the occasional slightly‑damp “we definitely meant to do that” experiment
- Laugh… a lot
- Discover that Cubs have infinite questions and zero fear
Cubs go camping and on adventures.
Expect adventure, excitement, questionable knots, and leaders trying to look calm while someone asks, “Can we sleep in a tree?”
Typical Cub questions include:
“Can we cook marshmallows with a magnifying glass?”
“If I run fast enough, can I outrun the rain?”
“Is it illegal to have two favourite knots?”
You don’t need to know the answers — you just need to enjoy the adventure.
Bonus: Cubs think adults are basically superheroes. Even if your only superpower is “I can untangle rope without crying.”
🔥 Scout Section Volunteer (Ages 10½–14)
Scouts are fearless, funny, and fully committed to doing things that make adults say, “Please don’t fall in.” They’re brilliant — and they need adults who are ready to join the adventure.
As a Scout volunteer, you’ll:
- Join in with camping, cooking, climbing, hiking, and the occasional soggy survival attempt
- Learn new skills you didn’t know you needed (like fire‑lighting in the rain)
- Laugh at the creative chaos only teenagers can produce
Scouts camp. A lot. Tents, night hikes, survival challenges, and the occasional “Is this supposed to be on fire?” moment.
Typical Scout moments include: “We built a raft! It floats… sort of.” “Don’t worry, we tested the rope swing. Twice.” “I’m not lost — I’m exploring with enthusiasm.”
You don’t need to be an outdoor expert — just willing to try things, join the adventure, and pretend you’re not scared of heights until you reach the top.
Bonus: Scouts think adults are cool(ish). Even if your only outdoor skill is “I can zip up a sleeping bag without trapping the fabric.”

Could you help us open a new section?
Ages 4-6 Years
We're nuts about the idea of starting a squirrel section! We just need a head honcho and a bunch of sidekicks. Once we've got our team assembled, it's as easy as acorns: a bit of training, some first aid, a DBS check, and we'll be scampering off on our mission!
Tell me more!
The Scout association has started opening a new provision for four to six year olds called Squirrels, to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it's most needed.

💬 What our Volunteers Say
“I came to help for one week… that was three years ago. I still haven’t escaped. But honestly? I don’t want to.” — Probably someone in our team
“I joined to support my child… but now they’re embarrassed because I’m having more fun than they are.” — Over‑enthusiastic parent‑turned‑leader
“I thought I’d be supervising. Turns out I’m climbing, crafting, camping, cooking, and occasionally wearing a traffic cone as a hat.” — Leader, mildly confused but very happy
“I came to help for one night. By 7:45pm I was wearing a cape, holding a rubber chicken, and leading a game I didn’t understand. Best night ever.” — Thrown in at the deep end, still floating
